As Perrimon and colleagues point out chimeras or mosaics have played and continue to play an important role in our analysis of development. In Drosophilia the technology for creating mosaics is mature and powerful. Even before transgenic technologies provided precision and efficiency, ‘classic’ mitotic recombination methods had been well-applied and allowed for mapping of major determinative events during embryogenesis, to mention just one application. Perrimon and colleagues over the years have been instrumental in developing and refining methods for performing mosaic analyses and they review those efforts here, providing a nice review of a method of great power and significance.
