The assembled genome of the social velvet spider and a draft assembly of the tarantula genome that represent two major taxonomic groups of spiders was reported. The genomes are large and intron length is long and exons are small. Interesting patterns of gene duplication are seen among venom and silk genes. Functional genomics and the application of contemporary genetic technologies could be challenging but possible particularly for the social velvet spider.
